The Art of Making a Great Toy

How I work, and why it matters.

Every toy that leaves my workshop begins the same way: with a sketch, a cup of hot cocoa, and a quiet question -- 'What would make a child's eyes go wide?' From there, I select materials by hand. The wood comes from sustainably managed North Pole pine forests. The stuffing is enchanted wool-cotton blend from our on-site reindeer meadow. Metal parts are hand-cast and filed smooth so there's never a sharp edge.

I don't rush. Some toys take a day; others take three weeks. A music box with twelve carols and 847 individually placed pins shouldn't be hurried. Quality control is simple: if I wouldn't be proud to hand it to Santa himself, it doesn't leave the workshop. In 200-plus years, I've returned more toys to the workbench than I can count -- and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Sketch & Dream

Every toy begins with a cup of hot cocoa and a quiet question: "What would make a child's eyes go wide?" I sketch until the idea feels right.
